Los niños con progeria desarrollan generalmente un severo endurecimiento de las arterias. Esta es una condición en la que las paredes de las arterias, los vasos sanguíneos que transportan nutrientes y oxígeno desde el corazón al resto del cuerpo, se endurecen y espesan, a menudo hasta restringir el flujo sanguíneo.
La mayoría de los niños con progeria mueren de complicaciones relacionadas con la aterosclerosis, incluyendo:
- Los problemas con los vasos sanguíneos que irrigan el corazón (problemas cardiovasculares), dando lugar a un ataque al corazón y a una insuficiencia cardíaca congestiva.
- Los problemas con los vasos sanguíneos que irrigan el cerebro (problemas vasculares cerebrales), que acaban en un accidente cerebrovascular.
